Privacy Policy

1Who we are

Unsubtitled is made by MEW IO LLC, a small company in San Francisco, California. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean MEW IO LLC, and “Unsubtitled” means our website at unsubtitled.com, the app inside it, and our apps for iPhone and Android when they arrive. We decide how the data described here is used, which makes us its controller.

2What we collect

When you practice

• Your conversations, as text. The scene you chose, every line you send, exactly as you sent it, and each of the character’s replies with what comes with it, along with anything else you type in a scene.
• An anonymous id for your browser. A random code in a cookie, so your conversations belong together without you having to sign up. It doesn’t contain your name or anything about you.
• How it ran for you: what a conversation cost us, how long its replies took, and your browser’s time zone, so we can keep Unsubtitled quick, affordable, and starting your free day at your own midnight.
• Your reading aid settings (furigana, romaji, translation, and suggested replies). These stay in your browser and never reach us.

When you write to us

Whatever you send us, in your words — a support request, feedback, a flag on something a character said, a scene you’d like, or why you’re leaving — with your name and email address where you give them, your account, and the browser you sent it from, which helps us reproduce a problem.

When you sign in

You sign in with Google, or with a link we email to you, to use the app. With Google, we receive your name, your email address, a link to your profile picture, and the id Google uses for your account; with an emailed link, only your email address. Sign in with Apple is coming: if you choose Apple’s “Hide My Email” then, we’ll receive a private relay address instead. We also note the browser you signed up on, and, if you came from someone’s invite link, that your account came from theirs — they’re told a friend joined, and never which friend.

When you subscribe

On our website, Stripe sells you the subscription as Link, its checkout, and takes the payment as the seller of record. You give your card and billing address to Link, not to us — it uses the address to work out the tax — and it handles your payment under its own privacy policy. Apple or Google does the same if you subscribe in their app stores. We never see or keep your card number. We receive only what we need to run your subscription, and keep it with your account.

When you visit

Like any website, our host keeps short-lived logs of requests: your IP address, your browser’s user agent, the page asked for, and when. We use them to keep the service running and safe.

When you ask for a sign-in link or write to us through the support form, we also keep a scrambled stand-in for the network you sent it from, for an hour or so, to stop one sender flooding the form or burying someone’s inbox. It’s made from your IP address with a secret only we hold, so it can’t be turned back into an address, and it tells us nothing except that two requests came from the same place. We don’t keep the address itself.

We also measure how Unsubtitled is used, through an analytics provider, to see how people find us and how far they get: the pages you open, roughly where you are, your device and browser, and the steps along the way, like signing up or subscribing, counted against a random id in a cookie. Never a line of a conversation, your name, or your email address. If you came to us from one of our own ads, it also tells us whether that visit went on to an account or a subscription, so we know which ads are worth running. None of it is used to aim ads at you, and our provider is told not to join it up with what it knows of you elsewhere.

Not in Europe, though. The EU, the UK, and Switzerland ask for your agreement before an analytics cookie, and rather than put a banner in your way we don’t measure there at all: where your browser says you’re in Europe, none of this loads and no analytics cookie is set.

When something breaks

If the website or the app runs into an error, it sends a report to our error-monitoring service, so we can fix it: what went wrong and where in our code, the page you were on, and your browser.

3What we don’t collect

• Your voice. Unsubtitled never uses your microphone or receives any audio of you. You type, or dictate with your phone keyboard’s own dictation, which turns speech into text on your phone under Apple’s or Google’s terms before anything reaches us. We only ever get the text.
• Advertising. We don’t aim ads at you, use advertising ids, or let anyone track you across other websites. We do measure our own site, and whether our own ads bring people to it, as What we collect describes.
• Anything else on your device: no location from your phone, no contacts, photos, or files.

4How we use it

• To run your conversation: to have the character answer you, speak the answer, and keep the scene going.
• To make Unsubtitled better: we read saved conversations to see which scenes work, where characters get something wrong, and what to fix.
• To keep it running and affordable, which is why we track what each conversation costs.
• To see how people find Unsubtitled and how far they get, so we know what to build and where we lose people.
• To decide which scenes to make next, from the ones you suggest, and to fix what you tell us is wrong.
• To let our team know as it happens when someone makes an account, has their first conversation, writes to us, or flags something, with what they need to act on it (see Team tools, below).
• To answer you when you contact us, and to act on what you ask, like closing your account.
• To write to you about your account: a welcome when you make it, and word when something about it changes, like Premium being added to it.
• To keep Unsubtitled safe: to spot abuse, and to protect our users, our service, and the law.
• To sign you in, and to keep your conversations with your account.
• To run your subscription: to give you access, charge you, and tell you about renewals and changes.

We don’t sell your personal information, share it for advertising, or use your conversations to train AI models.

5How AI is involved

The characters are AI. When you send a line, it goes, with the conversation so far and the scene, to an AI provider, whose model writes the character’s reply. The reply’s text then goes to a speech provider, which speaks it in the character’s voice.

Spoken lines are kept as audio files, so they can be played again. Anyone with a file’s exact link can play it, though the links aren’t published or guessable. If a character repeats something you said, like your name, that line’s audio is kept the same way. So please don’t share anything in a conversation that you’d want to keep secret, like passwords, card numbers, or health details.

The art is drawn ahead of time with an AI image model, which never receives anything about you.

6Who helps us run it

We use a few companies to run Unsubtitled. Each gets only what it needs to do its job for us, and handles it under its terms with us.

Hosting

Hosts the website and the app, runs our domain, and keeps the request logs described above.

Database and storage

Where conversations, costs, accounts, and support requests are kept, in the United States, and where the art and the characters’ spoken lines are stored.

AI

Writes the characters’ replies from the conversation’s text, and speaks them in the characters’ voices.

Email

Sends our email, like sign-in links, notes about your account, and replies to you, and holds our support inbox.

Error reports

Tells us when something breaks, from the error reports described above.

Analytics

Counts visits and the steps described above, so we can see how people find Unsubtitled and how far they get. It gets no conversations and nothing that names you, and nothing it counts is used to aim ads at you.

Team tools

Where our team works, and hears when something happens on an account, with what they need to act on it: a name, an email address, the browser you’re on, and, when you write to us, what you wrote. It doesn’t get your conversations otherwise.

Payments

Stripe, as Link, sells and takes payment for subscriptions bought on our website, as the seller of record, under its own privacy policy; Apple or Google does so in their app stores. Your card and billing address go to them, not to us.

We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale of our business, in which case this policy keeps applying to your data.

7Cookies and your device

Unsubtitled uses a few small cookies, and only to run itself: to keep you signed in, to finish a sign-in safely, to keep your conversations together before you sign in, to remember an invite link you followed, and — outside Europe — to count visits, and which of our ads they came from, as above. None of them advertise to you, and none of them follow you to other websites. You can clear them in your browser’s settings at any time; you’ll start fresh, with a new anonymous id.

Your settings are kept in your browser’s local storage, on your device only.

8How long we keep it

We keep what’s described here for as long as we need it to run and improve Unsubtitled, and longer where the law requires it, like the records behind a subscription. Your account lasts until you close it (see Closing your account), and the request logs our host keeps are deleted after a short time.

9Closing your account

You can close your account at any time:

• In the app: open your account (the round sticker at the top of the scenes), choose Close my account, and follow the steps. We’ll ask you to sign in again first, to make sure it’s you.
• On the web: if you no longer have the app or can’t sign in, choose Close my account on our support page, from your account’s email address, or write to support@unsubtitled.com, and we’ll help you from there.

When you close your account, we remove what identifies you — your name, your email address, your picture, and the ways you sign in — and it can’t be signed in to again. Some things stay, including what the law requires us to keep and what our team was already told. If there’s something in particular you’d like removed, write to support@unsubtitled.com and we’ll take care of it.

10Google and Apple sign-in

When you sign in with Google or Apple, we use your name, email address, picture, and account id only to create your account, sign you in, show who's signed in, and write to you about your account. We don’t use them for advertising, sell them, or use them to train AI models.

Unsubtitled’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

To close your account, see Closing your account. You can also remove Unsubtitled’s access at any time: in your Google Account, under Security, then Your connections to third-party apps and services; or in your Apple Account settings, under Sign in with Apple.

11Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

• tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy you can take elsewhere;
• correct it;
• delete it;
• stop or limit how we use it.

Write to support@unsubtitled.com or use the support page. We may need to confirm the request is yours, for example by asking you to send it from the browser or email address the data belongs to. You can have someone you authorize ask for you. We answer within the time the law where you live allows, and we’ll never treat you differently for asking.

In the EU, the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland

We use your data to give you the service you asked for (a contract with you); for our legitimate interests in improving Unsubtitled, keeping it safe, and understanding its costs, which don’t override your rights; to meet legal obligations; and, where the law asks for it, with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. You can object to our use of your data based on legitimate interests. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

In California and other US states

You have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose; to delete it; to correct it; and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We don’t sell or share personal information, as those laws define it, and we don’t use sensitive personal information to infer things about you. In the last 12 months, we collected the categories described in What we collect: identifiers (email, name, anonymous, analytics, and account ids, IP address), the content of your conversations and messages, internet activity (request logs, and the pages and steps our analytics counts), and rough location from your IP address, from you and your browser, for the purposes in How we use it, and disclosed them only to the kinds of providers above.

If we turn down your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer. We’ll look again and tell you what we decided and why. If you’re still not satisfied, you can contact your state’s attorney general.

12Children

Unsubtitled isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has used it, write to support@unsubtitled.com, and we’ll delete what they shared. Teenagers under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use Unsubtitled (see our Terms of Service).

13Keeping it safe

Everything travels over encrypted connections. Only the people who run Unsubtitled can see saved conversations and support requests, and only Unsubtitled itself can make a character speak. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data, and we’ll tell you if a breach affects it, as the law requires.

14Where your data goes

We’re in the United States, and your data is stored and handled here, and wherever our providers run their services. If you live elsewhere, the law where you live may protect data differently. Where it asks for it, we rely on recognized safeguards for these transfers, like the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses in our providers’ data protection terms.

15Changes to this policy

We update this policy from time to time, as Unsubtitled changes. We post each new version here with its effective date, and it applies from that date. We don’t always tell everyone about an update separately, so check back now and then. If you keep using Unsubtitled after an update, the new version applies to you; if you don’t agree with it, you can stop using Unsubtitledand close your account.

One exception, because it’s the fair thing and the law asks for it: if we ever want to use what we already hold about you for something materially different from what this policy says — a new purpose, or handing a new kind of data to a new kind of company — we’ll tell you first, by email or in the app, and where the law needs your agreement we’ll ask for it rather than assume it.
