Privacy Policy

1Who we are

Unsubtitled is made by MEW IO LLC, a small company in San Francisco, California. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean MEW IO LLC, and “Unsubtitled” means our website at unsubtitled.com, the app inside it, and our apps for iPhone and Android when they arrive. We decide how the data described here is used, which makes us its controller.

2What we collect

When you practice

• Your conversations, as text. The scene you chose, every line you send, exactly as you sent it, and each of the character’s replies with what comes with it (its readings, translation, the pose the character strikes, and the reply suggested for you), with the time of each line.
• An anonymous id for your browser. A random code in a cookie, so your conversations belong together without you having to sign up. It doesn’t contain your name or anything about you.
• What each conversation cost us to run. For each reply and each new voice line: which service made it, how much it used (tokens or characters), the price, and the scene, tied to the same anonymous id.
• Your reading aid settings (furigana, romaji, translation, and suggested replies). These stay in your browser and never reach us.

When you contact us

The topic you pick, your email address, your name if you give it, your message, your browser’s user agent (the line it sends that names the browser and system, which helps us reproduce a bug), and your browser’s anonymous id, so we can find your conversations if you ask us to.

When you sign in

Sign-in isn’t open to learners yet. When it is, you’ll be able to sign in with Google or Apple, and we’ll receive your name, your email address, and the id that provider uses for your account. If you choose Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we receive a private relay address instead, and mail we send there is forwarded to you by Apple. Today, only our own team signs in, with a link sent by email.

When you visit

Like any website, our host keeps short-lived logs of requests: your IP address, your browser’s user agent, the page asked for, and when. We use them to keep the service running and safe.

3What we don’t collect

• Your voice. Unsubtitled never uses your microphone or receives any audio of you. You type, or dictate with your phone keyboard’s own dictation, which turns speech into text on your phone under Apple’s or Google’s terms before anything reaches us. We only ever get the text.
• Tracking. We don’t use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking scripts, and we don’t use advertising ids.
• Anything else on your device: no location, contacts, photos, or files.

4How we use it

• To run your conversation: to have the character answer you, speak the answer, and keep the scene going.
• To make Unsubtitled better: we read saved conversations to see which scenes work, where characters get something wrong, and what to fix.
• To keep it running and affordable, which is why we track what each conversation costs.
• To answer you when you contact us, and to act on what you ask, like deleting your data.
• To keep Unsubtitled safe: to spot abuse, and to protect our users, our service, and the law.
• To sign you in, once accounts arrive.

We don’t sell your personal information, share it for advertising, or use your conversations to train AI models.

5How AI is involved

The characters are AI. When you send a line, it goes, with the conversation so far and the scene, to Anthropic’s Claude, which writes the character’s reply. The reply’s text then goes to Cartesia, which speaks it in the character’s voice.

Each voice line is stored as an audio file named by a long code worked out from its words, so the same line is only made once. Anyone with a file’s exact link can play it, though the links aren’t published or guessable. If a character repeats something you said, like your name, that line’s audio is kept the same way. So please don’t share anything in a conversation that you’d want to keep secret, like passwords, card numbers, or health details.

The art is drawn ahead of time with OpenAI, which never receives anything about you.

6Who helps us run it

We use a few companies to run Unsubtitled. Each gets only what it needs to do its job for us, and handles it under its terms with us.

Vercel

Hosts the website and the app, and keeps the request logs described above.

Neon

Our database, in the United States, where conversations, costs, accounts, and support requests are kept.

Cloudflare

Runs our domain’s DNS, and stores the art and the characters’ voice lines.

Anthropic

Writes the character’s replies, from the conversation’s text.

Cartesia

Speaks the character’s lines, from their text.

Twilio SendGrid

Sends our email, like sign-in links and replies to you.

Google Workspace

Our support inbox, where your support requests arrive.

We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale of our business, in which case this policy keeps applying to your data.

7Cookies and your device

• visitor: the anonymous id described above, kept for a year. Unsubtitled needs it to keep your conversations together.
• session: keeps a signed-in person signed in, for 30 days. Only our team signs in today.
• Your settings are kept in your browser’s local storage, on your device only.

That’s all: no third-party or advertising cookies. You can clear them in your browser’s settings at any time. You’ll start fresh, with a new anonymous id.

8How long we keep it

• Conversations and their costs: for as long as Unsubtitled runs, or until you ask us to delete them.
• Support requests: for as long as we need to help you, and then we delete them.
• Accounts, once there are accounts: until you delete yours.
• Request logs: kept by our host for a short time, and then deleted.

9Deleting your data

You can ask us to delete your data at any time, and we’ll do it within 30 days and tell you when it’s done.

• The easiest way: on our support page, choose Delete my data, in the same browser you practiced in. The form sends your browser’s anonymous id with your request, so we can find your conversations.
• By email: write to support@unsubtitled.com. Without an account, we can only find your conversations by that id, so the form is the surer way.
• Once there are accounts, you’ll be able to delete yours, and everything with it, from the app, or ask us by email from your account’s address.

We delete your conversations, your account if you have one, and your support requests, and we remove your id from our cost records. Copies in our database’s backups expire on their own shortly after.

10Google and Apple sign-in

When you sign in with Google or Apple, we use your name, email address, and account id only to create your account, sign you in, and write to you about your account. We don’t use them for advertising, sell them, or use them to train AI models.

Unsubtitled’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

To delete your account and its data, follow the steps in Deleting your data. You can also remove Unsubtitled’s access at any time: in your Google Account, under Security, then Your connections to third-party apps and services; or in your Apple Account settings, under Sign in with Apple.

11Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

• tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy you can take elsewhere;
• correct it;
• delete it;
• stop or limit how we use it.

Write to support@unsubtitled.com or use the support page. We may need to confirm the request is yours, for example by asking you to send it from the browser or email address the data belongs to. You can have someone you authorize ask for you. We answer within 30 days, and we’ll never treat you differently for asking.

In the EU, the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland

We use your data to give you the service you asked for (a contract with you); for our legitimate interests in improving Unsubtitled, keeping it safe, and understanding its costs, which don’t override your rights; to meet legal obligations; and, where the law asks for it, with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. You can object to our use of your data based on legitimate interests. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

In California and other US states

You have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose; to delete it; to correct it; and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We don’t sell or share personal information, as those laws define it, and we don’t use sensitive personal information to infer things about you. In the last 12 months, we collected the categories described in What we collect: identifiers (email, name, anonymous and account ids, IP address), the content of your conversations and messages, and internet activity (request logs), from you and your browser, for the purposes in How we use it, and disclosed them only to the providers above.

If we turn down your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer. We’ll look again and tell you what we decided and why. If you’re still not satisfied, you can contact your state’s attorney general.

12Children

Unsubtitled isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has used it, write to support@unsubtitled.com, and we’ll delete what they shared. Teenagers under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use Unsubtitled (see our Terms of Service).

13Keeping it safe

Everything travels over encrypted connections. Only the people who run Unsubtitled can see saved conversations and support requests, and our server signs every voice line, so nobody else can make a character say anything. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data, and we’ll tell you if a breach affects it, as the law requires.

14Where your data goes

We’re in the United States, and your data is stored and handled here, and wherever our providers run their services. If you live elsewhere, the law where you live may protect data differently. Where it asks for it, we rely on recognized safeguards for these transfers, like the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses in our providers’ data protection terms.

15Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update its effective date. If a change matters to how your data is used, we’ll tell you in Unsubtitled, or by email if we have your address, before it takes effect.
