1Agreeing to these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and MEW IO LLC (“we” or “us”) about using Unsubtitled: our website at unsubtitled.com, the app inside it, and our apps for iPhone and Android when they arrive. By using Unsubtitled, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.

Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and how we use it. It’s part of these terms.

2Who can use Unsubtitled

You need to be at least 13, or older if your country sets a higher minimum age for using online services on your own. If you’re under 18, you need your parent’s or guardian’s permission, and they agree to these terms for you. You can’t use Unsubtitled if the law forbids you from using it.

3The service, in early access

Unsubtitled is a place to practice a language by talking with characters, out loud, through everyday situations. It’s in early access, and still growing.

That means things will change, often and quickly. We may add, change, or remove scenes, characters, features, and limits at any time, without notice, and Unsubtitled may sometimes be unavailable. The one exception is for subscribers, when a change takes away something they subscribed for: see Subscriptions.

4Accounts

You sign in with Google, or with a link we email you, to use the app, and soon with Apple too. Keep that account secure, since whoever uses it can use Unsubtitled as you. Tell us at support@unsubtitled.com if you think someone else has gotten in. You can close your account at any time (see our Privacy Policy).

5Acceptable use

The characters are written to be good company, and to react like real people. They play along with light teasing, but they push back on crude or hurtful remarks, and they can end a scene. Please don’t:

• use Unsubtitled to harass anyone, or for sexual, hateful, or violent content;
• try to trick the characters into saying harmful things, or get around the limits built into them;
• break the law with it, or help someone else do so;
• disrupt or overload the service, or get around its security or limits;
• copy it, scrape it, or take it apart, except as the law lets you;
• collect its content to train or build a competing service or AI model;
• pretend to be someone else, or suggest we endorse you;
• use it in a way, or at a volume, that puts an unreasonable load on the service or runs up its costs, including automated or scripted use, or running it for other people.

A subscription is for your own practice, and Unsubtitled depends on everyone using it fairly. This list isn’t complete: we decide what counts as acceptable use, and we may limit how much anyone uses Unsubtitled.

Fair use. Unsubtitled is a small, independent project, and fair use is how we keep it good for everyone who practices here. So replies pause for anyone whose use goes far past what most learners use: several hours of conversation in a single day, or a couple of hours of it every day for a month. When that happens, Unsubtitled says so, and says when replies will come back.

6What you write

What you write to the characters is yours. So that we can run Unsubtitled, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, copy, process, and use it to provide the service, keep it safe, and improve it, including by reading saved conversations to make the scenes better. We don’t use it to train AI models, and we don’t sell it. The license lasts as long as we keep your content.

Please don’t put anything in a conversation that you don’t have the right to share, or that you’d want to keep secret. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.

7What we make

The characters, their art, their voices, the scenes, and the Unsubtitled name and logo belong to MEW IO LLC and our licensors. We give you a personal, non-commercial, non-transferable license to use Unsubtitled for your own learning, which lasts as long as you follow these terms.

You’re welcome to share screenshots and short recordings of your own conversations. Please don’t sell them, use the art or characters in your own products, or use our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you.

8The characters are AI

The characters’ lines, readings, translations, and suggested replies are written by AI as you talk. They can be wrong, sound unnatural, or miss something about the culture. The characters are fictional, not real people.

Unsubtitled is practice, not a certified course or professional advice. Please don’t rely on it for anything that really matters, like medical, legal, or safety information, or what to say in an emergency, and check anything important.

9Subscriptions

Some of Unsubtitled costs nothing: one scene with each character, and one conversation a day in each. What’s included without a subscription can change at any time.

The rest is a subscription service: for a monthly fee, you get access to what a subscription includes for as long as your subscription lasts, and what it includes can change over time, as the rest of Unsubtitled does. We’ll show you the price before you subscribe, and we’ll never charge you until you’ve subscribed and agreed to it.

If you subscribe on our website, Stripe sells you the subscription as Link, its checkout, and takes the payment as the seller of record: Link charges you, adds and pays the tax, sends your receipts, and answers disputes about the charge. Your card statement shows LINK.COM* UNSUBTITLED. We provide Unsubtitled itself, and these terms cover it.

Your subscription renews each month, and the next month’s fee is charged when it does, until you cancel. You can cancel any time — from your account here, or at link.com — and you keep access until the end of the month you’ve paid for. Payments aren’t refundable, in whole or in part, including when your access is limited or ended, unless the law where you live says otherwise. Stripe may refund a charge of its own accord, within 60 days, to settle a dispute.

We may offer a free trial. If you start one, we won’t charge you during it, and when it ends your subscription begins and we charge the monthly fee, unless you cancel before the trial ends. We’ll tell you how long the trial lasts and what you’ll pay after it before you start. A free trial is once per person.

We may change the price at any time. We’ll tell you at least seven days before a new price applies to your subscription, and it applies from your next renewal after that; if you don’t want to pay it, cancel before then and you won’t be charged it. The price doesn’t include tax: it’s added at checkout where the law requires, worked out from your billing address.

A change to what a subscription includes works the same way when it matters: if we take away something you subscribed for, we’ll tell subscribers before it applies to them, and you can cancel before your next renewal. Everything smaller than that, and everything outside a subscription, still changes as Unsubtitled does — at any time, without notice.

Inviting a friend. When someone who followed your invite link subscribes within seven days, we give you a free month of Premium, one per friend. The offer is ours to change or stop at any time, and we may withhold or take back a month earned through accounts that aren’t what they appear to be.

If instead you subscribe in our iPhone or Android app, Apple or Google handles the payment under its own terms, including renewals, cancellations, and refunds, and you manage the subscription in your App Store or Google Play account. Ask them for a refund.

10Other services

Unsubtitled relies on services from other companies, like your phone’s keyboard dictation, which Apple or Google provides under its own terms, and the providers listed in our Privacy Policy. We aren’t responsible for other companies’ services or websites, including any we link to.

11Limits, suspension, and ending access

You can stop using Unsubtitled, or close your account, at any time (see our Privacy Policy).

We may limit, suspend, or end your access to Unsubtitled, or to any part of it, at any time and for any reason, or for none, with or without notice. That includes when we believe you’ve broken these terms or used Unsubtitled in a way that isn’t acceptable, when your use costs more than is reasonable, when it’s needed to protect people or the service, or when the law requires it. We don’t have to tell you why, and we won’t owe you anything for it. Don’t try to get around a limit or a suspension, for example with a new account, a new browser, or another way in.

We may also stop offering Unsubtitled, or any part of it, at any time, with or without notice. The sections on what you write, what we make, subscriptions’ refunds, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, and the law survive when these terms end.

To the extent the law allows, you’ll defend and compensate MEW IO LLC for claims, losses, and costs (including reasonable lawyers’ fees) that come from your breaking these terms or misusing Unsubtitled.

15The law and disputes

If something goes wrong, please write to support@unsubtitled.com first. Most problems can be sorted out that way, and we’ll try for at least 30 days before either of us goes further.

These terms are governed by the laws of California, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be decided by the state or federal courts in San Francisco County, California, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction. If you’re a consumer living outside the United States, you keep the protections of your own country’s mandatory laws, and you may bring a claim in your local courts.

16Changes to these terms

We update these terms from time to time, as Unsubtitled changes. We post each new version here with its effective date, and it applies from that date. We don’t always tell everyone about an update separately, so check back now and then. If you keep using Unsubtitled after an update, you accept the new terms; if you don’t agree with them, you can stop using Unsubtitled and close your account.

17If you got the app from an app store

Apple’s App Store

If you use our iPhone or iPad app, these terms also say:

• These terms are between you and MEW IO LLC, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content.
• Your license is to use the app on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions allow, including through Family Sharing.
• Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for the app.
• If the app fails to meet any warranty that applies to it, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund what you paid for it, if anything. To the fullest extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
• We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims about the app, including product liability, failing to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and consumer protection, privacy, or similar laws.
• If someone claims the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling, and discharging that claim.
• You confirm that you aren’t in a country under a US government embargo, or designated by the US government as supporting terrorism, and that you aren’t on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
• You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app, like your wireless carrier’s.
• Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them, Apple may enforce them against you.

Google Play

If you use our Android app, Google Play’s terms and policies also apply to your download and to any purchases, including refunds. Google isn’t a party to these terms, and we, not Google, are responsible for the app.
