Quick answers

How do I start a conversation?

Open the scenes and tap one. Its preview shows where you are, who you're talking to, and the phrases worth knowing. Tap Start the scene, and the character speaks first. Reply in the box at the bottom and send when it reads right.

Can I speak instead of typing?

Yes: use your phone keyboard's microphone. On an iPhone, tap the microphone on the keyboard (turn on Dictation in Settings, General, Keyboard, if it isn't there). On Android, tap the microphone on Gboard. Set the keyboard to Japanese first, so it writes what you say in Japanese.

Your phone turns your speech into text. Unsubtitled never hears you; it only gets the words you send.

I can't hear the character.

Tap the speaker on any of their lines to play it. If it's still silent, turn up the volume, make sure your phone isn't on silent, and close any other app that's playing sound. A browser sometimes holds the first line until you've tapped something; the speaker plays it any time.

Where did the furigana, romaji, or translation go?

They're in the sliders button at the top right of a scene: switch any of them back on. When one is off, a small button on each line opens it for just that line.

Why did the scene end?

Scenes end the way real conversations do: when you say goodbye, when the two of you head somewhere else, or when it has run its course. Open it again from the scenes for another go, or pick a new one.

Who am I talking to?

Mei, Ren, Yoko, and Kenji are AI characters, each with a personality and a voice of their own. They talk with you at the level you chose, and they're patient: tap the speaker to hear a line again, or ask them to say it more simply.

Does it teach keigo?

It has you use it. Each scene sets how polite everyone is, as it would be in Japan: casual with Mei over lunch, polite with Yoko on your first day on her team, and keigo with Kenji's clients at a sales meeting. The suggested replies match what you'd say back, so polite Japanese gets practiced where it belongs. New to it? Start with what keigo is and when to use it.

Will it help before a trip to Japan?

That's what the scenes are for: order at a ramen shop or a convenience store, ask the way at a station, join a bus tour to a hot spring town. Try your travel Japanese out loud, with someone who answers, before you need it for real.

How much does it cost?

You can start without paying: one scene with each character, and one conversation a day in each. Premium, a monthly subscription, lets you practice out loud every day, in all kinds of situations and with all kinds of people. You'll see its price, and any free trial, before you subscribe, and you can cancel any time.

What happens to what I say?

Your conversations are saved as text, with your account, so we can run the app and make it better. We don't sell them, show you ads, or use them to train AI models. The Privacy Policy has the details.

How do I close my account?

In the app, open your account (the round sticker at the top of the scenes) and choose Close my account. It asks you to sign in again first, to make sure it's you. Can't sign in? Choose Close my account in the form, from your account's email address, and we'll help you from there.
