Picking up the rental car

Renting a car in Japan: Japanese at the counter

You and Kenji are old friends, driving out to the coast for the weekend with a few others. He booked the car; you're at the counter for the keys, and the insurance options are up on the board. Kenji speaks first, in polite Japanese: です and ます, the way people talk with strangers, neighbors, and coworkers. Here is how it can begin, and the phrases and words worth having ready.

How Kenji opens the conversation

Kenji always speaks first. This is the scene's own opening line, with a reply you could give back at the same level:

  • 保険ほけんはどうしますか?付つけた方ほうが安心あんしんですよ。

Hoken wa dō shimasu ka? Tsuketa hō ga anshin desu yo.

What shall we do about insurance? It's easier on the mind with it.

    You could say

    Sō desu ne. Tsukete kudasai.

    You're right. Please add it.

Other ways it can begin

No two conversations go the same way, and the first line changes too. Each of these can open the scene:

  • 予約よやくした車くるまは白しろいワゴンです。大おおきいですよ。

Yoyaku shita kuruma wa shiroi wagon desu. Ōkii desu yo.

The car I booked is a white wagon. It's big!

    You could say

    Wā, tanoshimi desu ne.

Wow, I'm looking forward to it.

Menkyoshō, motte kimashita ka? Uketsuke de tsukaimasu yo.

Did you bring your driver's license? They use it at the counter.

    You could say

    Hai, koko ni arimasu yo.

Yes, I've got it right here.

Jitsu wa, unten suru no wa hantoshi buri nan desu.

Actually, it's been half a year since I last drove.

    You could say

    Daijōbu desu yo. Yukkuri ikimashō.

It'll be fine. Let's take it slow.

ETC kādo mo karirareru sō desu yo.

Apparently we can rent an ETC card too.

    You could say

    Jā, karimashō ka.

Well then, shall we rent one?

Kono kānabi, kanari benri desu ne. Nante ne.

This car navi is pretty handy, huh. ...Just kidding.

    You could say

    Sore, dajare desu ka?

    Was that a pun?

How polite to be

polite Here Kenji speaks polite Japanese: です and ます, the way people talk with strangers, neighbors, and coworkers, and the replies suggested to you match the level you'd use back. The guide to keigo explains the three levels, and when each is right.

Try it out loud

In Unsubtitled, Kenji says these lines in their own voice, and answers whatever you say back, typed or dictated, with furigana, romaji, and a translation until you no longer need them.
